Connecting a Bluetooth scanner or printer

How to connect supported Bluetooth devices to Packsmith and how to print with AirPrint.

Do I need a scanner or printer to use Packsmith?

  • Scanner: Optional. You can always swipe right to mark items as packed – no scanner needed.
  • Printer: Required. You’ll need either:
    • An AirPrint-compatible printer, or
    • A supported Bluetooth printer.

Supported Bluetooth devices

Packsmith supports a limited number of Bluetooth devices. We currently support the following models:

Scanners:

  • C Barcode Scanner
  • Packsmith Scanner

Scanners must be in MODE 3 to connect. If the scanner has been renamed, it may not pair correctly.

Printers:

  • AD240-bt
  • A81pro

Currently, the supported label size is 4x6.

How to connect your Bluetooth scanner or printer

  1. Turn on Bluetooth in your phone’s settings.
  2. Power on your device and make sure it’s nearby.
  3. In the Packsmith app, go to Settings then Connected Devices.
  4. Tap Connect barcode scanner or Connect a Bluetooth printer.
  5. Once connected, you’ll see a green Connected confirmation.

If your device doesn’t appear, make sure it’s powered on and not already paired to another phone or computer.

Reconnecting a device

If your scanner or printer isn’t reconnecting automatically:

  1. Go to Settings then Devices in the Packsmith app.
  2. Tap the device, then tap Forget Device.
  3. Turn the device off and back on.
  4. Reconnect it using the steps above.

Printing with AirPrint

AirPrint is supported on most modern Wi-Fi printers from brands like HP, Canon, Brother, and Epson.

Printing with AirPrint

  1. Make sure your printer and phone are on the same Wi-Fi network.
    1. Your printer must have built-in AirPrint support.
  2. You’ll choose the printer each time you tap Print in the app.

If your printer isn’t showing up, try restarting both your phone and printer, and check that they’re connected to the same network.

Troubleshooting

My device isn’t showing up: Make sure it’s powered on, nearby, and not paired elsewhere. You may need to unpair and try again.

The scanner is connected but not scanning: Confirm it’s a supported model in MODE 3, and it has not been renamed.

The printer is connected but won’t print: Bluetooth printers may have a delay (30-60 seconds). Double-check your label format and that the printer is ready. Try restarting the printer or re-pairing.

Can I switch between AirPrint and Bluetooth? If a Bluetooth printer is connected, Packsmith will use this as a default. If you’d like to switch to AirPrint, you may un-pair the Bluetooth printer.

Can I use a different Bluetooth printer that isn’t listed? We don’t recommend it. Only supported models are guaranteed to work.

A few things to keep in mind

  • Devices should reconnect on their own: Once your scanner or printer is paired, it’ll usually reconnect automatically when the app is reopened if the device is powered on.
  • Scanners can go to sleep: If your scanner stops responding, it may have timed out. Press the button on the top to power it back on – it should reconnect right away.
  • Scanners must keep their default name: If a scanner is renamed, it may stop working with the app. Stick with the provided name.
