Fulfilling an order in Packsmith

How to pick, pack, and ship a Shopify order in the Packsmith app.

Before you start

You don’t need to configure everything before you start packing, but we recommend adding some key information to save yourself time, reduce errors, and get the most out of Packsmith.

  • Make sure your Shopify store is connected. This is a requirement– you’ll need this to pick and pack orders!
  • Select your preferred shipping carriers under the Shipping Methods section of the Packsmith Shopify app.
  • Add weights and dimensions to your products. These should be set directly on each product in your Shopify store.
  • Add your packaging in the Packsmith Shopify app. In the Packaging section, you can add boxes and mailers, along with their weights and dimensions. This helps Packsmith suggest the best fit for each order.
  • Confirm your Location address is set up in Shopify. This is what Packsmith uses for your return address, so you’ll want to make sure it’s the address you’re shipping from.
  • Finally, ensure your AirPrint-compatible printer is nearby.

Step 1: Find your order

Once your store is connected, new orders will automatically appear in the Orders screen. Right now, we only support US domestic orders.

  1. Tap an order to open it.
  2. You’ll see an itemized list of SKUS in the order.

If there’s a problem with your customer’s address, we’ll flag it here and suggest a fix. You can also update the address in Shopify directly if you want to make changes. If the address isn’t corrected, the label may fail–or worse, the package could be returned to you.

Step 2: Pick and pack

To mark items as picked, swipe right on each line item or use a supported scanner. You’ll see a checkmark once it’s added to the shipment.

  • Accidentally swiped something? Just swipe right again to remove it from the pack.
  • You can pick some or all items in the order.

Partial shipments: If you only swipe some items and tap Ship Items, Packsmith will check with you to see if you want to fulfill a partial order. This can be useful if you’re missing stock or splitting shipments–but make sure it’s what you intend, since Shopify will reflect the partial fulfillment.

Step 3: Choose your packaging

Packsmith can recommend the best packaging for each order, but we need your box or mailer options and dimensions first.

  • You can add your saved box or mailer sizes in the Packaging section of the Packsmith Shopify app.
  • Once that’s set up, Packsmith will automatically suggest the best fit based on the items you’ve picked.

  • You can also select a different box or mailer, or enter custom dimensions and weight manually.

Accuracy matters. Be sure your box or mailer dimensions and weights are correct. If the package details don’t match what the carrier scans at drop-off, you could see an adjusted charge on your bill–sometimes significantly higher!

Step 4: Choose a carrier and buy a label

Once your package details are filled in, you’ll see available shipping options for the order.

  1. Review the carriers and service levels shown
  2. Tap the one you want to use, then hit Buy Label

The cost of the label will be charged to your default payment method. To use a different card, just tap the pencil icon next to your payment method before purchasing.

You can control which carriers show up in the app from the Shipping Methods section of the Packsmith Shopify App.

Step 5: Print the label

  1. Tap Print to open the AirPrint dialog.
    1. If you're using a Bluetooth printer, this will print automatically.
  2. Select your printer and confirm to print the label

That’s it! Tap Done to return to the order screen and pack another order.

Need to reprint later? You can do that from the confirmation screen or from the Labels section of the app.

A few things to keep in mind

  • If multiple users are packing at once, an order might get packed twice. Ensure you're coordinating with your team.
  • You’ll need weights and dimensions in order to buy a label. We recommend updating this in the Packaging section of the Packsmith Shopify app so you don’t have to enter these details for each order.
  • If an order has already been marked fulfilled in Shopify, it won’t appear in your Packsmith queue.
  • Only domestic orders assigned to active fulfillment locations will appear in the Packsmith app.
